Preventing abuse is many a goal of individuals within the criminal justice system. Education of the young is one way to assist with this ever growing problem and prevent domestic abuse.

Domestic violence can be defined as an abusive relationship within a residence or home. This kind of abuse can take many forms such as verbal, physical or even sexual abuse. It can occur between a married couple, paramours or even two individuals of the same sex. This sort of abuse can be brutal for the victim and many times end in death.

Preventing this kind of abuse is thought to stem through education. A community needs to take responsibility for its citizens and provide education programs that will assist with decreasing this problem. A victim needs to know what are the options available to them that should get them free from this type of situation.

Most communities have a violence shelter. These shelters are typically open twenty four hours per day and seven days per week. They can shelter women and children in a safe, undisclosed location that protects them from their abuser. While residing at the shelter, many women participate in group therapy that will assist them with empowering themselves and raising their self esteem. The shelter can help them with housing, clothing and applying for local programs that can help them get out on their own. They also can assist them with filing a court order for protection from domestic violence.

An ever increasing problem in the United States is abuse in the residence. Victims many times stay in relationships due to feeling trapped and that there is no help available to them. This is furthest from the truth. There are programs such as shelters, support groups and social service agencies that can help them throughout the process of getting out of the relationship. A victim needs to take the first step and make the call to the shelter in their area to see what is available to them.
