ABOUT

The SEELINE women's network, initiated by B.a.B.e. (Be active Be, emancipated) from Croatia, is comprised of founding members from: Albania, Bosnia & Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Hungary, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Turkey and Yugoslavia.

Out of our experience of cooperation on the sub-regional (Balkan) level, as well as out of our experience of monitoring Croatian laws, introducing changes in legal system and lobbying for desired gender sensitive legislation we recognized a great need to work in the framework of regional South Eastern Europe network. A network is the best approach for influencing the legislation on regional level in order to make it more gender sensitive, unified and balanced. The formulation of the Project was done in informal consultation with different lawyers and women's human rights groups from the SEE region.

SEE regional women's legal initiative monitoring and influencing legislative systems will provide an opportunity for women's advocates to meet and work together, to exchange strategies that worked in their respective countries, as well as to start the work on the unification and balance of legislative systems within the region. As all governments of the region ratified CEDAW and signed BPA and have been active in the process of establishing ICC the obligations that they have to fulfil are common and obvious. Unfortunately, accountability of the Governments and Parliaments is not the common occurrence. The work of regional network will force the governments and parliaments to become more accountable and to incorporate gender mainstreaming and gender sensitive provisions within legal system in the national machinery of protection of women's rights.
